We recently completed a split-level project in Warrnambool that allowed us to really flex our building muscles. The site conditions presented a number of challenges, requiring an innovative approach. These included:

• A large shed to the Western end of the block had been renovated by the owner and was to be maintained
• A fall from the west to east of the block of approximately 2m
• Close neighbours on all four sides, including one that looked over the site from their balcony
• Narrow street access – just 6m frontage to the street for the whole site.

Designer, Designers by Nature, created a three-level home that would see four bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living areas and an interactive connection of entertaining and indoor/outdoor spaces come together under the one roof. The majority of the main living areas face north, and thanks to an innovative arrangement of the home, are private from the street.

The first thing to notice upon approaching the home is the contemporary exterior, achieved through James Hardie Linea cladding. A large 2.7m high x 1.5m wide door, and feature fieldstone wall from Boral Stone Australia mark the main entryway. Once inside, the main living spaces feature engineered oak flooring, which allows for low-maintenance living.

To the right of the entryway sits the master bedroom, complete with a walk-in robe and en-suite. In the bathroom, a 3D feature tile adds a contemporary aesthetic, complemented by Terrazzi Black textured tiles on the floor, sourced from Beaumonts. This style is repeated throughout the second bathroom in order to ensure continuity.

This look continues in the kitchen, with a similar contemporary palette established through a Viscount white granite splashback, benchtops and cabinetry. These surfaces are offset by contrasting timber textures and white finishes, creating a visual contrast that catches the eye. Set within a larger open-plan living space, the kitchen looks over the main pool, which sits alongside an alfresco entertaining area, complete with BBQ and kitchenette. Spotted gum feature ceilings complete these outdoor spaces, adding yet another point of interest.

The remaining bedrooms and additional living area sit off this main living space, allowing the clients to close off rooms when required, or open them up when entertaining.

Our dedicated team spent four months on pre-construction processes, and then 12 months building this project, working closely with the client to ensure their ideas were executed just as they envisioned it.
